Catching Some Z’s: Prevalence of Sleep Deprivation in Today’s Teens

Picture
“According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens between the ages of 10 and 17 should get 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep each night. However, based on a recent survey conducted at our school, only 6.5% of the student body get eight to 10 hours of sleep each night. On the other hand, 57.4% of students get six to eight hours each night, while 27.7% get four to six hours. Students cite feeling pressured by colleges to participate in more activities and take rigorous courses, in pursuit of becoming a “well-rounded” student. This pressure may be a possible cause of the prevalence of sleep deprivation in today’s youth...” Read more

Letter to the Editor: A Grateful Reader Sends His Thanks From California

“Dear Ms. Schneider,
I was recently privileged to receive a copy of The Colonel sent to me by my long time friend Mrs. Stacey Moniz. She thought I would enjoy it as I am a 63-year-old gay man who has been out for over 50 years. Having lived through Stonewall, the initial AIDS crisis out of the Castro in San Francisco and witnessing much persecution throughout my lifetime, I was very moved to see the dialogue and understanding which prevails with the younger generation. My experience is that hatred generally comes out of ignorance and fear. What you are doing is shining a light in the darkness and using education as a key to higher consciousness..." Read more

Devastating Crash Teaches Lesson: Kylee Taylor Recovers from a Major Accident

Picture
“On March 13, senior Kylee Taylor was speeding around a corner on Long Cove Rd. and rolled her SUV into a rock wall. As soon as emergency personnel removed Taylor from under the car, she was rushed to L&M Hospital to treat her injuries.
Despite the graphic nature of the crash, Taylor recalls every second of her accident. “I remember all of it,” said Taylor. “I started to lose control of my car, and it hit a stone wall, rolled over a couple of times and landed right on top of my head. All of my windows broke, and the airbags went off, and the main thing I remember was watching my car just roll over on top of me..." Read More

The Unexpected Blessing: Jeremiah Kalbach Returns to School After Battle with Brain Cancer

Picture
“Running down the lacrosse field the nausea crept up his throat once more. On the sidelines he emptied the contents of his stomach for a moment of relief, but for months this carried on for this eighth-grader.
When the season ended and summer began, the vomiting was soon accompanied by headaches that worsened over time. One week before school started that fall medical attention was necessary. After a CAT scan given at Backus Hospital, the symptoms met their diagnosis. Young Jeremiah Kalbach had brain cancer..." Read More

Coffeehouse Craze: Upperclassmen form an Up Coming Band

Picture
"In the music world, image is everything. For the band Too Mainstream, that image is one carefully crafted with bandanas, headbanging and, sometimes, thick British accents. “We were at the Ledyard fair last year,” explained junior Rosie Welles, “and I was joking that the band name Sarah (Skilbred) came up with was too mainstream, and it just sutck and became our band name...” Read more

Lax Traditions: Team Bonding Brings Both Programs Success

Picture
““I am a member of the team. I rely on the team. I defer to it, and I sacrifice for it because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.”

Chanting this in unity at the end of every practice is just one of the traditions that go with being a member of the girl’s lacrosse team. Other traditions include kissing Amber Morth’s headband before every game. “It started off as a joke freshman year,” said Morth. “I came to a game with a stupid looking headband on, and I told everyone it was lucky so they had to kiss it. So now every year I get a headband for the season and before every game the whole team kisses it.”...” Read more

"Ledyard high school students love rockin’ out for good causes. On Friday, April 27, Amnesty International hosted the ninth annual battle of the bands known as Jamnesty. Ten bands played and over one hundred parents and students attended..." Read More
